Estimate only. Rates are indicative, without GST, based on international spot and USD-INR. Your jeweller’s rate, making charge, hallmarking fee and final invoice may differ.

Making charge, hallmark and your bill

The making charge (also called labour charge) is what the jeweller charges for designing and crafting the piece. It is usually quoted as a percentage of the metal value, typically 8–25% for gold jewellery: lower for plain chains and simple bangles, higher for intricate, handmade or antique designs. Some jewellers quote a flat amount per gram instead, or add wastage. Ask for the making charge in writing and compare a few shops, because it can change the final price more than a small move in the gold rate.

Before you pay, check the BIS hallmark on the piece: the BIS logo, the purity (such as 22K916) and the six-character HUID, which you can verify in the BIS CARE app. Always take a proper GST bill that shows the net weight, purity, rate per gram, making charge, any stone charges and GST separately. You will need it for exchange, resale or an insurance claim.

Calculator FAQ

How is GST charged on gold and silver jewellery?

GST on gold and silver jewellery is 3% of the full transaction value, which includes the making charge, so the calculator applies 3% to the metal value plus making. The separate 5% GST you may read about applies to job work (when you give your own gold to a jeweller to make jewellery), not to buying ready jewellery, where 3% applies on the full bill including making.

What is HUID?

HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) is a six-character alphanumeric code stamped on each hallmarked piece of gold jewellery, next to the BIS logo and the purity mark (such as 22K916). Enter it under "Verify HUID" in the BIS CARE app to see the purity, type of article and the jeweller’s registration, which should match your bill.

Why is my jeweller’s rate different from Bhavflow’s?

Bhavflow’s rate is one indicative national rate calculated from international spot prices, USD–INR, import duty and an estimated market premium. Jewellers follow local association or bullion-dealer rates, add their own margin and may round the rate, and the day’s premium can be higher or lower than our estimate. Replace the rate in the calculator with the one your jeweller quotes.

How current is the rate in the calculator?

It is Bhavflow’s latest rate, updated about every 30 minutes. The “As of” time under the rate shows when it was last updated. Prices move during the day, so confirm the rate with your jeweller before you buy.

Rate per gram or per 10 grams: which should I enter?

The calculator needs the rate per gram. Gold is often quoted per 10 grams, so divide that rate by 10 (₹1,10,000 per 10 g is ₹11,000 per gram). Silver is usually quoted per kg, so divide by 1,000.
