Chandi ka bhav Kolkata: what the rate means here

Chandi ka bhav Kolkata mein: silver buying peaks around Dhanteras, Akshaya Tritiya, the wedding season and annaprashan ceremonies, when Bowbazar shops are busiest. The rate itself does not follow the calendar, so on busy days the saving is in comparing making charges on plates, bowls and gift sets rather than waiting for a cheaper board rate.

Buying silver in Kolkata

In Kolkata, silver is a traditional gift for a baby’s annaprashan (rice-feeding ceremony): plates, bowls, spoons and glasses are bought from jewellers in Bowbazar and the older markets of north Kolkata, alongside silver puja items and jewellery.

Silver utensils and gift items are usually priced by weight at the day’s rate plus a making charge per gram or per piece. Ask whether an item is 999 or a lower purity, and keep the bill for buy-back.

What to check

  • Purity: 999 for fine silver bars and coins, 925 for sterling jewellery; ask for it on the bill.
  • Hallmark: voluntary for silver. Since 1 September 2025 BIS offers HUID-based silver hallmarking (BIS mark, SILVER, purity grade, 6-digit HUID), verifiable in the BIS CARE app.
  • Price: net silver weight × rate, plus making charges, plus 3% GST. Ask how the shop buys silver back.

Silver rate in Kolkata: FAQ

Kolkata mein chandi ka bhav Delhi se alag kyon hota hai?

Only slightly, if at all. The metal price is national and GST is 3% everywhere; small gaps come from transport, insurance and each shop's margin. Making charges vary much more than the rate.

What silver is usually bought for an annaprashan?

A set of plate, bowl, spoon and glass is a common gift. Check the purity stamp, the weight and the making charge; heavier plain items carry lower making charges per gram than intricate ones.

Does silver need a hallmark?

No, silver hallmarking is voluntary. Since 1 September 2025 BIS offers HUID-based silver hallmarking; a hallmarked piece shows the BIS mark, SILVER, the purity grade and a 6-digit HUID you can verify in the BIS CARE app.

Why do jewellers and shopping sites quote a higher silver price than Bhavflow?

Bhavflow’s silver rate is a national benchmark for 999 fine silver (international price, USD–INR, import duty and an estimated domestic premium calibrated to IBJA benchmark rates), excluding GST. Jewellers and retail sites usually quote above this benchmark (making, margin, local premium), and 3% GST is added on the bill. Bhavflow does not show a retail price, because it differs from shop to shop.
