Karat kya hai22K vs 24K tablePrice farkJewellery: 22K kyunSaving: 24K kyun18K & 14KChecklistFAQ🔢 Karat kya hai — 24K se 14K tak
Karat is simply how much of the metal is gold. 24K is treated as pure, so 22K means 22 parts gold out of 24 — that works out to 91.6%. The remaining 8.4% is alloy: usually silver, copper or zinc, added to make the metal workable.
This is why the hallmark carries both a karat stamp and a three-digit code. The three digits are the purity in parts per thousand: 999 for 24K, 916 for 22K, 750 for 18K, 585 for 14K. If the tag says 22K916, the numbers agree with each other. If a seller says “22 carat” but the bill says something else, stop and ask.
⚖️ 22K vs 24K — side by side
The difference is not just chemistry. It changes how the piece behaves, how it is billed, and what you get back when you sell.
| 22K (916) | 24K (999) | |
|---|---|---|
| Gold content | 91.6% | 99.9% |
| Rest of the metal | 8.4% alloy | 0.1% trace |
| Hardness | Firm, holds shape | Soft, dents easily |
| Typical use | Jewellery, chains, bangles | Coins, bars, some temple items |
| Making charges | Usually applies (8–25%) | Usually none or minimal |
| Colour | Slightly deeper yellow | Brightest yellow |
| At resale | Metal value minus making, stones, melting loss | Closest to metal value, may need assay |
💰 Price fark exactly kaise nikalta hai
There is no separate “22K market.” The rate you see for 22K is derived from the 24K rate by applying the purity ratio. In practice: 24K rate × 91.6% ≈ 22K rate per gram. So 22K is not cheap gold — it is 8.4% less gold in the same gram.
Two more things sit on top of that metal value when you buy jewellery: making charges (percentage or flat) and GST at 3% on gold plus making. That is why the final bill for a 22K chain can be well above the plain 22K rate. Run your own weight and today's rate through the gold calculator to see the split before you visit the store.
💍 Jewellery ke liye 22K kyun
Pure gold is soft. A 24K bangle worn daily will bend, scratch and lose its shape — and every repair means a little metal loss. That is exactly the problem 8.4% alloy solves: it makes the metal firm enough to hold a setting, a clasp and a design.
22K also takes stone settings and engraving far better, and it keeps the deep yellow look most Indian buyers expect. For daily-wear chains, mangalsutra, bangles and gifting, 22K is the standard choice for a reason.
🏦 Saving ke liye 24K kyun
If the goal is to hold value rather than wear it, 24K coins and bars make more sense: you pay for metal, not for craft, and there is little or no making charge. When you sell, there is no design to be written off.
The trade-offs are real too. 24K is soft, so it scratches and needs careful storage; many jewellers still run an assay or charge a small deduction before buying it back; and coins often come with packaging or polish charges. Buy the certified 999 variety, keep the bill, and keep the coin in its original sealed packing if you plan to sell later.
💎 18K aur 14K — kab ye behtar hain
If your piece has diamonds or coloured stones, 18K (750) is usually the practical choice: it is harder, so the setting grips the stones better, and the slight colour difference is hidden under the stone work. 14K (585) is tougher still and cheaper per gram, which is why a lot of everyday and fashion jewellery uses it.
All three — 22K, 18K, 14K — are hallmarked the same way, with the BIS mark, the purity code and a six-character HUID you can check on the BIS CARE app.

FAQ
1. 22K aur 24K mein kaunsa zyada shuddh hai?
24K. It is 99.9% gold, while 22K is 91.6% gold with 8.4% alloy added for strength. Higher purity does not automatically mean a better purchase — it means softer metal.
2. Kya 24K ki jwellery pehen sakte hain?
You can, but it is not practical for daily wear. Pure gold bends and dents easily, and every repair removes a little metal. Most jewellers steer everyday pieces towards 22K and stone-set pieces towards 18K.
3. 22K ka rate 24K se kam kyun hota hai?
Because a gram of 22K contains less gold — 91.6% versus 99.9%. The 22K rate is derived from the 24K rate using that ratio, so it is a purer-versus-alloyed difference, not a discount.
4. Resale mein kaun sa better hai?
For resale, coins and bars in 24K usually recover closest to the metal rate because no making charge or design is lost. Selling jewellery, in contrast, typically involves deductions for making charges, stone value and melting loss. Confirm the shop's policy before you buy.
