Bhavflow publishes one national indicative rate. A Chennai jeweller’s board rate can be slightly higher or lower because of local association or bullion-dealer rates, transport and insurance costs, and the shop’s own margin; making charges and 3% GST come on top.
MJDTA revises its rate in the morning and sometimes again later in the day. Because it is set locally, Chennai’s 22K price can differ from an IBJA-based national figure by a few rupees per gram, sometimes more.
Tamil Nadu jewellers often split their charges into wastage (sedharam, a percentage of the gold weight) and a making charge (seikuli). Add both when you compare shops.
Chennai’s gold trade has two sides. Sowcarpet and George Town, around Parry’s Corner, are the wholesale end, where bullion dealers and jewellery makers supply the city’s shops. T. Nagar and Pondy Bazaar are the retail end, where most families actually buy, often in large multi-floor showrooms.
Gold here is bought by the sovereign and mostly as 22K jewellery: thali chains, bangles and necklaces for weddings. The Tamil month of Aadi (mid-July to mid-August) is traditionally avoided for weddings, so showrooms run Aadi offers on making charges and wastage, and Aadi Perukku in early August is itself a popular day to buy. Akshaya Tritiya, Deepavali and the Thai wedding season in January and February are the other peaks.
Chennai is one of the cities where this page shows an official local board rate: the Chennai Wholesale Jewellers Association (CWJA) rate, with its date and a link to the source, next to Bhavflow’s national indicative rate. Use it as the day’s 22K reference before wastage, making charges and 3% GST.
Chennai buyers usually think in sovereigns (pavan): one sovereign is 8 grams, and shops commonly quote the 22K rate per gram and per sovereign. The Madras Jewellers and Diamond Traders Association (MJDTA) publishes a daily board rate that most local jewellers follow.
Chennai’s jewellery trade is split between T. Nagar, one of India’s largest jewellery retail areas, with multi-storey showrooms on Usman Road and around Pondy Bazaar, and Sowcarpet and George Town, the old wholesale and bullion district. Buyers think in sovereigns (pavan) of 8 grams, and most shops follow the daily rate published by the Madras Jewellers and Diamond Traders Association (MJDTA).
BIS-recognised Assaying & Hallmarking Centres are located in both Sowcarpet and T. Nagar. Every hallmarked piece shows the BIS logo, the purity (22K916 for most jewellery) and a 6-digit alphanumeric HUID, which you can verify in the BIS CARE app. Any recognised centre will also test a buyer’s jewellery for a fee.
Akshaya Tritiya is one of the busiest gold-buying days in Tamil Nadu, and demand also rises around Pongal, Deepavali and the Thai month wedding season. Many shops open early and close late on Akshaya Tritiya.
Ask how wastage (sedharam) and making charges (seikuli) are calculated and add both, then add 3% GST. Compare the final price per sovereign across shops, check that the HUID and net weight are printed on the bill, and ask whether old gold is exchanged at the day’s rate minus a deduction, and how much that deduction is.

A sovereign is 8 grams. The table on this page shows the 8-gram price for 24K, 22K and 18K at today’s national indicative rate; a Chennai shop will use the MJDTA 22K rate plus wastage, making and 3% GST.
It is the daily gold and silver rate published by the Madras Jewellers and Diamond Traders Association for Chennai and much of Tamil Nadu. Bhavflow does not reproduce it; Bhavflow shows its own national indicative rate.
Many Chennai showrooms cut making charges or wastage during Aadi, because few weddings take place that month. The gold rate itself is not discounted: it follows the market. Compare the total bill, and check the CWJA board rate on this page for the day’s 22K reference.
Sone ka bhav aaj, today’s gold rate, is at the top of this page: Bhavflow’s national indicative rate for 22K, 24K and 18K gold per 10 grams and per gram, and chandi ka bhav aaj ka (today’s silver rate) per kg, all excluding GST and making charges. The local association board rate is shown next to it, with its date and a link to the source.
No. Bhavflow publishes one national indicative rate, calculated from international prices, and shows it on every city page. Jewellers in Chennai may quote slightly different rates because of local association or bullion-dealer rates, transport and insurance costs and their own margins, and they add making charges and 3% GST.
Bhavflow is free to use, with no login and no ads. Always confirm the final price with your jeweller.
